Sony Erases PC Evidence from PlayStation 5: Files Discreetly Removed

Evidence suggests Sony may be reconsidering its commitment to the PC gaming market. The latest indication comes from changes within the PlayStation 5's operating system. In November 2025, the PlayStation community discovered hidden, inactive icons within the PS5 system files labeled "CrossBuy" and "PS5PC." This fueled speculation that Sony was developing its own PC software or launcher to fully integrate console and computer gaming. However, user ZubyTech posted on X (formerly Twitter) on April 4, 2026, that these icons had been removed from the PS5 system. While ZubyTech's post brought the deletion to public attention in April, Sony had quietly removed the files in December 2025, shortly after their initial discovery. This action supports rumors that Sony has significantly scaled back or halted plans to port single-player games to PC. Consequently, titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Saros, and Marvel's Wolverine, reportedly planned for release on Steam, have been internally canceled.

Shift in Sony's PC Gaming Strategy Suggested by PlayStation Icon Removal and CrossBuy Tag Elimination

The removal of the icons likely reflects this shift. If Sony reduces its investment in the PC market, particularly for single-player titles, a dedicated launcher becomes unnecessary, justifying the removal of the "CrossBuy" and "PS5PC" tags. Furthermore, PlayStation recently modified its official website, removing PC references linked to specific internal studios. While Sony has not officially commented on this strategic shift, these signs increasingly suggest a change in the company's approach to the PC gaming market. Source: ZubyTech, April 4, 2026, X post.
