Nintendo Spoils Fox McCloud's Appearance in Super Mario Galaxy Film, Leaving Fans Disappointed

Shortly before The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrives in theaters on April 1, 2026, Nintendo's announcement that Fox McCloud of the Star Fox series would appear in the film sparked outrage among some fans who felt the surprise should have been preserved for the cinema experience. While Fox McCloud has only crossed paths with Mario in the Super Smash Bros. game and has never been part of the Mushroom Kingdom, some fans were nonetheless excited by the prospect of seeing him join Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser on the big screen alongside his Arwing spaceship. However, many were disappointed that Nintendo revealed this cameo only days before the film's release, spoiling a potentially exciting theater moment. Several gaming sites echoed this sentiment, noting that the announcement diminished what could have been a memorable surprise. Although some fans may have spotted him in a previous trailer, Nintendo's public confirmation was unexpected. Takaya Imamura, Fox McCloud's original artist, who retired from Nintendo in 2021, expressed his excitement about the character's appearance in the film.

Fox's Cameo in Super Mario Movie Sparks Mixed Fan Reaction amidst New Character Possibilities

The reveal breaks from Shigeru Miyamoto's established precedent that Nintendo franchises remain within their own universes, with Pikmin being the only previous exception. For fans frustrated by the lack of new Star Fox games since Star Fox Zero (Wii U, 2016), this cameo offers a mix of excitement and frustration. The public will have to wait until the film's release to discover who will voice Fox in the original and French versions. The confirmed cast includes Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek). The voice actor for Fox McCloud in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie remains unconfirmed. The inclusion of Fox McCloud might suggest that more Nintendo characters could appear in future Mario films. A live-action Zelda film is scheduled for release in 2027, starring Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda. This cameo has left some fans both thrilled and disappointed by Nintendo's decision to reveal the surprise beforehand.
