Epic Games' Drop in Fortnite Engagement Leads to Layoffs of Over a Thousand Employees

Through a challenging period, Epic Games is making tough decisions to adapt and grow, aiming to leverage their popular title Fortnite and the evolving Unreal Engine for future success.

Epic Games has announced a new round of large-scale layoffs, impacting over 1,000 employees, or approximately 23% of its workforce. CEO Tim Sweeney communicated the decision internally, citing declining Fortnite engagement beginning in 2025 as the primary reason. He explained that the company has been spending significantly more than it earns, necessitating drastic measures to ensure financial sustainability. In addition to the layoffs, Epic Games will shut down several recent game modes, including Rocket Racing, Ballistic, and Festival Battle Stage. While Sweeney acknowledged that Fortnite remains one of the world's most successful games, he admitted that maintaining consistent engagement between seasons has been a challenge. Affected employees will receive severance packages that include at least four months of base salary, with higher amounts depending on tenure, as well as six months of health coverage and four extra months of pay. The company will hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss Epic's future plans. Sweeney stated, "We are spending far more than we are earning and need to make significant cuts." The CEO added that the company has identified over $500 million in additional cost savings, including reductions in contract work, marketing expenses, and unfilled positions.

Sweeney contextualized the decision within the broader industry landscape, citing slower growth, reduced consumer spending, and increased competition for players' time. He also highlighted Epic's specific challenges, including maintaining Fortnite's appeal with each new season and the company's ongoing re-entry into the mobile market following legal disputes with Apple and Google. This round of layoffs, announced since March 24, 2026, marks the second major one for the company in recent times. In 2023, Epic Games let go of approximately 830 employees, about 16% of its workforce, for similar reasons. Sweeney emphasized that these dismissals are not related to AI usage and that the company remains interested in expanding its developer base and investing in technology within a more sustainable cost structure. Recent data indicates that Epic Games generated approximately $6.2 billion in gross revenue last year. Data from Circana shows that Fortnite remains the most played game on PlayStation and Xbox consoles in the United States. However, average playtime per user has declined compared to the previous year, reinforcing a downward trend in engagement, even as the game remains dominant in popularity.

Epic Games Shifts Strategy Amid Rising Costs, Focusing on Fortnite Evolution and Unreal Engine Advancement

To address this, Epic Games has already begun adjusting its strategy, recently increasing the price of V-Bucks, Fortnite's virtual currency, citing rising operational costs. Sweeney affirmed that the company intends to restructure once more, betting on the development of new experiences for Fortnite and the technological evolution towards the next generation of Unreal Engine as key components of its future strategy.
