Crimson Desert Kicks Off with 239,000 Steam Players

Crimson Desert, the new open-world action-adventure game from Pearl Abyss, the developers behind Black Desert, is now available. Upon release, Crimson Desert quickly became a top-selling game, dominating sales charts across various digital stores. The game quickly gained popularity on Steam, reaching a peak of 239,000 concurrent players within its first few hours (beginning at 10 PM UTC on March 19). As of Friday morning (Korea time), that number has decreased to 128,802 players exploring Pywel. As of Thursday, Crimson Desert topped pre-orders on the PlayStation Store and was the best-selling game globally on Steam in major markets such as Korea, the US, UK, Germany, France, and Japan. One hour after launch, Crimson Desert reached 221,663 concurrent players, becoming the third most-popular game on Steam. Live viewership on Twitch peaked at approximately 496,000. The game can be played on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (Steam, Apple Mac, and Epic Games Store). It features voice support in Korean, English, and Chinese, with subtitles available in 14 languages. Players assume the role of Kliff, leader of the Greymane mercenary group.

Impressive Launch of Crimson Desert Amidst Technical Challenges and Ambitious Vision

Adolfo's review notes that Crimson Desert requires improvements and fine-tuning to fully realize its potential: "Crimson Desert is precisely this. It's a rollercoaster where simple and poorly executed elements can detract from its great qualities... The title desperately needs more polish, bug fixes, and numerous quality-of-life adjustments. Yet, here I am, having invested dozens of hours with a desire to return as soon as this text concludes. Its ambition is immense, almost wild, and it’s understandable that it may not be perfect on day one. If you’re patient, learn to cope with its technical stubbornness, and allow yourself to enjoy this extraordinary world, it will reward you despite the chaos." Notably, these milestones occurred after Pearl Abyss, the game's publisher and developer, saw its stock price drop around 30%. Overall, Crimson Desert's launch has been impressive, despite some mixed feedback.
