A Betrayal to Artistic Integrity": Community and Among Us Rip DLSS 5 by NVIDIA

The recent announcement of NVIDIA's DLSS 5 at GDC 2026 has sparked a heated debate within the PC gaming community, with concerns over its potential impact on original art styles and artistic integrity.

NVIDIA's announcement of DLSS 5 at GDC 2026 continues to generate headlines, primarily due to negative responses. The promise of using AI to inject photorealistic lighting and materials into games such as Resident Evil Reverie and Starfield has sparked widespread criticism, with many fearing it will undermine original artistic visions. The reveal video on X quickly garnered over 15 million views, with a majority of responses critical of the technology. Demonstrations of DLSS 5 in Resident Evil: Requiem raised concerns about AI-driven sloppiness, with some comparing the results to low-quality AI filters used in video calls. Critics worry that DLSS 5 may homogenize game visuals, moving away from the unique artistic styles of individual games. NVIDIA has responded, claiming developers will have granular control over intensity, color grading, and masking.

The criticism extends beyond anonymous gamers, with content creators and industry professionals disapproving of how the AI alters 3D models, replacing original styles with generic and overly bright visuals. YouTuber Suzi Hunter ("The Sphere Hunter") was particularly critical of the Resident Evil Reverie demo, stating on X, "This is a betrayal to the art of these games... Painting over intentional, handcrafted 3D art with an absurdly bright, wrinkled, porous, fraudulent, and filtered look is deeply disrespectful." The responses to NVIDIA's original video were filled with memes, with many users deriding the technology as a "sloppy filter" or "AI-generated trash filter." Some comments even revived an infamous Blizzard meme, questioning if NVIDIA's announcement was a misguided April Fool's joke.

Other studios have joined the criticism, mocking NVIDIA on social media. These accounts shared screenshots and videos comparing games like Resident Evil Requiem, EA Sports FC, and Starfield with and without DLSS 5 enabled, highlighting noticeable differences in lighting, materials, and facial features. For example, comparison images of Grace from Resident Evil Requiem show her lips appearing fuller, and she seems to be wearing eyeshadow. The Among Us official X account, known for its sarcastic tone, posted its own "graphic enhancement" transforming the game's classic 2D crewmate into a hyperrealistic aberration, satirizing the idea that AI photorealism automatically improves video game art direction. PowerWash Simulator, Worms, Kaizen GameWorks, Cult of the Lamb, Styx: Blades of Greed, and Massive Damage Inc.'s art director Bryan Heemskerk also weighed in on the controversy. Despite NVIDIA's assurances that studios will have tools to control the intensity of the AI and Bethesda's Todd Howard's enthusiasm, the internet has largely reacted negatively. Video game critic Alex Donaldson noted the technology's impact on Hogwarts Legacy, saying, "DLSS 5 makes characters look older, but that doesn’t jive with the game’s lore and could leave players scratching their heads."

Artistic Integrity Under Threat with DLSS 5's Fall Release by NVIDIA

Ultimately, NVIDIA faces the challenge of addressing concerns that DLSS 5 may compromise artistic integrity as it approaches its anticipated fall release.
