Complementing Buckley, Paul Mescal portrays Shakespeare, identified not by name but through his powerful performance, channeling his emotions into the suffering of a Danish prince on stage. When the play is finally performed, Agnes recognizes William Shakespeare mirroring her own heartache over their child’s death. She witnesses the pain of a father, who, though often absent, grapples with his grief through his writing. Agnes transforms these turbulent emotions into joy and spectacle for the audience. With its blending of traditional and unconventional elements, Hamnet could become a strong contender during awards season.
