Unknown Worlds has released the sixth development vlog for Subnautica 2, its upcoming open-world survival and crafting game. The vlog highlights the game's new base-building system, focusing on the design philosophy and technological advancements that set it apart from previous Subnautica titles. Unlike the prefabricated structures of Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero, Subnautica 2 will employ a real-time modular construction method that offers extensive customization options. According to Anthony Gallegos, Design Lead, "Building bases is fundamental to Subnautica as a franchise. With Subnautica 2, we wanted to expand players expression forms and bet on a more sculptural construction system, offering much more flexibility than anything we’ve done before. We’re eager to see what players will create and how they’ll push the system to its limits." Subnautica 2, which is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, marks the series' debut on a different alien world and introduces a procedural, tile-based system that allows for greater customization. The new sculptural base-building approach allows players to design and build custom-shaped windows and interlocking structures. Bases will be broken down into unique tiles that interact, giving players more freedom without being limited by terrain or fixed shapes. The developers have expanded window creation, eliminating the need for specific shapes. The developers have also upgraded corridors, and round rooms have been confirmed. In future updates, players will be able to paint their bases, customize lighting, and add interior decoration.
