Ubisoft Acquires Amazon's Montreal Studio and MOBA March of Giants - Talent Reinforcement in Online Gaming Pursuit
Ubisoft has acquired Amazon Games Montreal and the rights to March of Giants, an in-development multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game. The acquisition includes the game's intellectual property and the development team, who will continue working on the project under Ubisoft. This acquisition demonstrates Ubisoft's continued pursuit of opportunities within the competitive online gaming market, even after previous project cancellations. Neither company disclosed the financial terms. Ubisoft gains experienced talent, including Creative Director Xavier Marquis, known for his work on Rainbow Six Siege, and Production Leader Alexandre Parizeau, who previously worked at Ubisoft. "Returning to Ubisoft completes a circle," Marquis stated, reflecting on his previous tenure and expressing enthusiasm for developing March of Giants with Ubisoft's support. Parizeau also thanked Amazon for its initial support and stated his ambition to make the game a leading MOBA title.
Ubisoft Strengthens MOBA Portfolio with Acquisition of Amazon's Montreal Studio and March of Giants
According to Bradly Shankar of MobileSyrup, Amazon Games Montreal was established last year by former Ubisoft employees, including Marquis. This sale occurs during a period of restructuring for Amazon Games, which has experienced significant cuts in recent months and is narrowing its project scope. March of Giants had been one of the Montreal studio's few active development projects, with closed alpha tests conducted in September 2025 to refine the game. As part of the agreement, Amazon will provide marketing support for March of Giants, including promotion on Twitch. The deal is expected to close by December 16. Currently in its playtesting phase, March of Giants allows gamers to request access through Steam. A major update is planned for 2026, introducing new giants, more competitive modes, and other core systems. March of Giants features 4v4 battles where players control giants in a strategic war environment that blends direct combat with troop command and tactical structure construction, known as Battleworks. This acquisition strengthens Ubisoft's portfolio in the MOBA market.
