2026's Street Fighter Film Promises to be Quite Kitschy and Outdated, Intentionally

2025's Nostalgic, Quirky Street Fighter Film Unveiled at The Game Awards

The Game Awards offered the first look at the 2025 Street Fighter film, and the trailer's unique approach immediately sparked conversation. This adaptation departs sharply from expectations, especially compared to the kitschy 1995 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Director Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip) has stated that he is embracing the kitsch aesthetic for the new movie, which seems to embrace the legacy of poorly received video game adaptations of the '90s. The trailer features costumes reminiscent of a Japan Expo convention, stiff fight choreography, and exaggerated jump kicks. Yet, it also meticulously recreates the characters' iconic hairstyles, demonstrating a commitment to the franchise's offbeat, arcade-style essence. This approach is as audacious as it is quirky. Casting choices also contribute to the film’s nostalgic feel. David Dastmalchian, cast as M. Bison, bears a striking resemblance to Raul Julia's portrayal of the villain three decades prior, further suggesting a deliberate homage. The Game Awards 2025 in Los Angeles showcased several cast members who will bring these characters to life: Cody Rhodes as Guile Orville Peck as Vega 50 Cent as Balrog Jason Momoa as Blanka Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim Oliver Richters as Zangief.
