Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Breaks The Last of Us: Part 2's Record at The Game Awards

Expedition 33 Sweeps Game Awards 2025, Breaking Records and Gaining Praise

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 triumphed at The Game Awards 2025, securing nine awards, including Game of the Year, surpassing The Last of Us: Part II's previous record of seven wins in 2020. Sandfall Interactives, the game's developer, received twelve nominations, making Expedition 33 the most-nominated game in the award show's history, according to IGN Brasil. The development team wore in-game "Baguette" character skins as they accepted awards for Best Art Direction, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Performance (Jennifer English), Best Score and Music, Best Independent Game, Best RPG, and Best Debut Game. Released in April 2025, Clair Obscur quickly garnered critical acclaim and a spot on Microsoft's Game Pass subscription service. However, it lost the fan-voted Player's Choice award to Wuthering Waves. Meanwhile, Sandfall Interactives announced a new level and photo mode in a forthcoming update to Expedition 33. At the same event, Larian Studios—developers of Baldur's Gate 3, which won six awards in 2023—previewed their upcoming title, Divinity. Despite facing competition from major studios like Nintendo, Sony, and Kojima Productions, as well as highly anticipated sequels like Hollow Knight: Silksong and Hades 2, Clair Obscur ultimately dominated the evening.
