Russell Crowe Harshly Criticizes Gladiator 2

Russell Crowe Disapproves of Gladiator 2's Departure from Maximus' Ethical Foundation

Russell Crowe's portrayal of Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator catapulted him to international stardom. However, Crowe has expressed his dissatisfaction with the upcoming sequel, Gladiator 2, in which he does not appear. Crowe has criticized Gladiator 2's plot element revealing Maximus had a secret child with Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). Russell Crowe Fights Against Moral Compromise in Gladiator 2's Portrayal of Maximus

Crowe emphasized his commitment to maintaining Maximus's integrity during the production of Gladiator, fighting to protect the character's honor every day. He specifically took issue with suggestions for sex scenes involving Maximus, as well as the idea of a secret child with Lucilla, mother of Lucius (Paul Mescal). Crowe felt that these suggestions undermined the character's moral core. "It wasn't the pomp, it wasn't the circumstance, it wasn't the action it was the moral core," Crowe said. He also questioned the logic of implying concurrent relationships with both his wife and Lucilla. Given Crowe's intense connection to the character, many viewers share his concerns about the direction of Gladiator 2, as evidenced by the sequel's reception.
