Netflix Sometimes Fears Adapting Certain Things, Says The Witcher Actress

Netflix Alters Ciri's Sexuality in The Witcher Adaptation, Contrasting Source Material Focus

Freya Allan, star of The Witcher, has stated her approval of Netflix's decision to stay true to the books for the show's brutal Season 4 finale. The season depicts the confrontation between The Rats and the bounty hunter Leo Bonhart, during which the group is systematically killed, with Ciri arriving too late to save them. Netflix adaptations often simplify character arcs and relationships to better resonate with contemporary audiences, a trend seen in series like Shadow and Bone, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Sandman. In line with this pattern, The Witcher reframes elements of Ciri's journey. Specifically, Netflix's adaptation places greater emphasis on Ciri's sexuality compared to the books, explicitly portraying her attraction to women. This contrasts with the source material's focus on destiny, pain, and power struggles, clarifying an aspect of her story that was previously ambiguous. For example, the show remains faithful to the source material in its graphic depiction of Ciri witnessing the beheading of her girlfriend, Mistle. This transforms subtle hints from the books into more pronounced character development suitable for television.
