Struggling with Cash Grab Backlash, Bungie Revamps Destiny 2's Power-Leveling System in Renegades Expansion

Following the conclusion of the initial ten-year saga of Destiny 2 with The Final Shape, Bungie aimed to launch a new narrative arc with The Edge of Fate. However, according to game director Tyson Green, the expansion failed to resonate with players who had remained dedicated to the game. The team's strategy of providing more challenges for veteran players—including higher levels, enhanced weapons and armor, and progression systems designed for dedicated players—backfired. Players perceived the expansion as an exploitative cash grab that offered superficial rewards. Green acknowledged that players wanted their efforts to feel worthwhile, rather than simply seeing numbers increase. As a result, the game experienced a significant drop in active players compared to The Final Shape. This negative reception led Bungie to alter its development strategy. The Renegades expansion introduces changes to address criticisms of the power-leveling system in Destiny 2. Updates 9.5.0 (released December 2) and 9.5.0.1 (released December 9) aim to improve the game by: Increasing opportunities for power progression, especially within expansion content. Allowing players to reach the power cap through Renegades activities. Carrying over Seasonal Power and Featured Gear from season to season.

Revamped Power System & Star Wars-Inspired Storyline in Renegades Expansion for Destiny 2

Making all Exotic weapons and armor readily available. Replacing the manual power catch-up chest with organic drops, allowing players to reach 300 Power simply by logging in and playing Renegades with friends. In addition, Bungie is increasing vault capacity to 1,000 slots, and improving the filtering system. These changes will revamp the power system and immerse players in a science-fiction storyline inspired by Star Wars. Based on early access impressions, Bungie is now releasing two mid-sized expansions per year, instead of annual major expansions, to address issues more rapidly and better cater to player desires. While Renegades draws inspiration from Star Wars, it remains separate from the Lucasfilm universe, with developers crafting an original narrative with a distinct identity. Preorders for Renegades on the PlayStation Store have performed well, ranking behind Resident Evil Requiem, Reanimal, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and 007 First Light. Renegades, with its space western theme and Star Wars inspiration, is scheduled for release on December 2, 2025. It remains to be seen whether the revamped power system and new content will entice lapsed players to return.
