Final Fantasy Composer Nobuo Uematsu Opposes GenAI

Final Fantasy Composer Nobuo Uematsu Resists AI Integration in Music Creation

Nobuo Uematsu, the renowned composer for the Final Fantasy series, opposes the use of Generative AI (GenAI) in video game music. In an interview with Jasmac Magazine, Uematsu stated he has never utilized GenAI tools for his compositions and has no plans to start. Uematsu believes a key aspect of appreciating music involves understanding the composer's background, an element he finds lacking in GenAI-composed tunes due to their cultural emptiness. He further asserted that all human-created music is inherently unique because of its instability, characterized by natural fluctuations and imperfections that distinguish each artist. In contrast to Uematsu's stance, a Square Enix executive confirmed the company's support for incorporating AI into game development. This aligns with a broader industry trend, as more than half of Japanese studios are reportedly already utilizing generative AI. Despite past retirement rumors, Uematsu confirmed he is still actively composing music for the third Final Fantasy VII remake.
