There was no announcement regarding Death Stranding 2 or Ghost of Tsushima during the State of Play event on February 12, 2025. However, Sony Interactive Entertainment presented another important announcement: Saros, a new game from Housemarque studios, which gained global recognition for their 2021 release Returnal. The Finnish developers have been working on this project, which could be referred to as a spiritual sequel, for approximately four years. Saros is said to “evolve the satisfying gameplay and enigmatic narrative introduced in Returnal.” Housemarque further emphasizes that it represents “the ultimate evolution of the play-centric experience that Housemarque is known for.” At present, with only a CGI trailer available, we must rely on their statements, but the studio has established a notable reputation.
In terms of the story, we will assume the role of Arjun Devraj, a powerful Soltari soldier who will stop at nothing to find the person he is searching for. Portrayed by actor Rahul Kohli (Midnight Sermons, The Fall of House Usher), Arjun Devraj will be a character who does not evolve in isolation, unlike Selene in Returnal, as it has been announced that he will encounter other characters along his journey. According to the PlayStation Blog, Saros’ gameplay differs from Returnal with its resource and continuous progression system, making every death beneficial. However, Housemarque has adopted a generative progression system where the world reportedly “changes with the rhythm of deaths,” allowing for equipment upgrades that include evolving weapons and armor pieces.

Saros is considered a spiritual sequel to their 2021 hit Returnal and has been in development for approximately four years. The name “Saros” originates from the Greek word meaning ‘saved’ or ‘preserved.’ The game stars Arjun Devraj, portrayed by actor Rahul Kohli, as a determined Soltari soldier on a mission to find someone significant to him.The gameplay of Saros builds upon Returnal’s foundations by introducing resource management and continuous progression. Unlike in Returnal, death in Saros will have meaningful consequences, allowing players to upgrade equipment with evolving weapons and armor pieces. The environment is described as dynamic, changing along with player progress through a generative progression system where each death contributes to the evolving world and gear.Housemarque claims that Saros represents “the ultimate evolution of the play-centric experience” they are known for, although currently, only a CGI trailer provides visual representation of the game.
