Low-end PC Gaming to Vanish from Computer Electronic Gaming Market
Preparing for a future where high-performance gaming may become more common, as the demand for premium and immersive experiences potentially surpasses that of low-end PC gaming.

The era of low-end PC gaming may be coming to an end. By 2028, rising memory and SSD costs could eliminate the budget-friendly, sub-$500 entry-level PC segment, according to Gartner, a top analyst firm. These increased component costs are projected to jump 130%, effectively rendering low-margin, entry-level laptops obsolete. Market pressures, including skyrocketing memory prices and reduced supply, are also expected to extend the lifespan of existing computers. Business users will likely hold onto their systems 15% longer by the end of 2026, while consumers will wait an additional 20% before upgrading. Gartner also forecasts a 10.4% drop in global PC shipments by 2026 due to these trends. The higher prices of AI PCs may further delay their projected 50% market penetration until 2028, as consumers opt to retain older hardware longer.
Budget PC Gaming Future Uncertain Amidst Competitive Laptop Launches and Persistent Cost Hikes
The evolving tech landscape may exacerbate these challenges. While the Snapdragon X2 Elite has yet to be released, rumors suggest Nvidia will launch its N1 and N1X laptops this year; however, Nvidia has not confirmed these plans. The collaboration between Nvidia and MediaTek is also expected to yield new laptops, potentially creating further competition in the market. Intel designed Panther Lake with the expectation that the N1 would become a competitor, though the specific design adaptations to counter the N1 remain unclear. Speculation exists regarding a potential N1 mini PC, though it wouldn't be a traditional desktop. Persistently high RAM and SSD costs, combined with these market factors, suggest a continued squeeze on the budget PC segment, potentially leading to its predicted disappearance by 2028.
