A surprising scenario has emerged: the acquisition of Kadokawa Corporation by Sony Interactive Entertainment. According to reports from Reuters this morning, which obtained confidential information, it has been disclosed that Kadokawa Corporation owns FromSoftware, the studio known for developing the Dark Souls series and Elden Ring.
However, Kadokawa is primarily a multimedia giant in Japan, owning Spike Chunsoft, the Niconico platform (Japanese YouTube), and Enterbrain and Famitsu magazines, among others. The initial idea for Sony Interactive Entertainment in wanting to acquire Kadokawa was not primarily to target FromSoftware but to strengthen its multimedia catalog, which becomes one of the main battlegrounds at a time when video games alone are insufficient to become a pop culture giant. Regardless, even if this acquisition were to take place, nothing guarantees that FromSoftware would automatically become a PlayStation studio and continue making games for other platforms, as is the case with Bungie at Sony or Activision at Xbox.
