Zootopia 2 Smashes Box Office Records in 2025, Only Second Animated Film to Surpass $1 Billion in Less Than Three Weeks

Zootopia 2 has proven a major success for Disney, quickly joining the ranks of films surpassing $1 billion at the box office in 2025. Before its third weekend, the animated film had grossed $986 million, guaranteeing its ascent past the $1 billion mark. It reached this milestone faster than any animated film except Ne Zha 2. Prior to Zootopia 2’s release, only Ne Zha 2, the live-action Lilo & Stitch, and Avatar: Fire and Ice had achieved this feat in 2025. The film has garnered positive reviews, boasting a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 96%. A post-credits scene also suggests Disney intends to bring back Judy and Nick for another sequel. Previously, Inside Out 2 was the fastest to reach $1 billion, achieving the mark in 19 days. Zootopia 2 is also the second consecutive film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, following Moana 2, to reach this milestone, and the fifth from the studio overall, following Frozen, Frozen 2, Zootopia, and Moana 2.

Zootopia 2’s success is largely due to its strong performance in China, a region that has been restricting U.S. releases recently. A significant portion of the film’s revenue comes from China, accounting for nearly half of its earnings. To date, Zootopia 2 has earned over $444 million in China, surpassing the $232 million earned in the United States. In Portugal, the film has grossed $1.2 million, exceeding the earnings of the film Demon Slayer but falling short of Infinity Castle’s $1.1 million and Lilo & Stitch’s $5 million. During its Thanksgiving debut, Zootopia 2 grossed $556 million worldwide, $239 million more than the first Zootopia earned during its opening weekend overseas, securing fourth place for the biggest global box office opening ever.
