Rush Hour 4: Trump’s Request Revives Controversial Buddy Cop Franchise

Rush Hour 4 is officially in development, with Paramount Pictures handling distribution and Warner Bros. Studios managing production. The film reunites Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker in their original roles, with Brett Ratner returning to direct. The decision to revive the buddy cop franchise nearly 20 years after the trilogy concluded followed what sources describe as a direct request from former President Donald Trump to Skydance CEO David Ellison and other studio executives. Warner Bros., the original producer, will receive a portion of the box office earnings before costs are covered, while Paramount will receive a fixed distribution fee. Ratner’s return as director has sparked controversy, however, due to misconduct accusations against him in 2017. His alleged actions led several studios, including Lionsgate, to reject involvement in the project. According to Borys Kit on X (formerly Twitter), Lionsgate debated working with Ratner in July 2024 but ultimately declined—before Trump reportedly intervened. It is worth noting that Jackie Chan also faced sexual assault accusations in 2017, with Olivia Munn and Elliot Page among his accusers, further highlighting the sensitive nature of the production.

Rush Hour 4 Resurrection: Chan and Tucker’s Nostalgic Revival at 71 and 54

Chan and Tucker have expressed interest in a sequel since at least 2017 and have reportedly developed a script. Chan mentioned ongoing discussions about Rush Hour 4 at the Red Sea Film Festival last year. At 71 and 54, respectively, Chan and Tucker are getting older, potentially adding a new dynamic to their on-screen partnership. As of November 25, 2025, no official start date for filming or release has been announced. The studios may believe in the commercial potential of the nostalgia associated with the films and the strength of the Chan-Tucker duo. It remains to be seen whether the film can capture the magic of the original Rush Hour movies.
