Lilo & Stitch Crushes It, Beating A Minecraft Movie to Become 2025’s Biggest Global Hit
Guess what? According to Deadline, the live-action Lilo & Stitch isn’t just 2025’s biggest earner among Motion Picture Association movies. It’s also officially kicked A Minecraft Movie out of the top spot worldwide for the year! This Disney flick has already raked in a massive $957.6 million globally. A huge chunk of that—$553.9 million—came from outside the U.S. A Minecraft Movie is right behind it, with $954.9 million worldwide and $530.9 million from international sales. Right now, these two are the only movies this year to have earned over $400 million in the U.S. Lilo & Stitch grabbed $423.9 million here, while Minecraft took in $403.7 million. But wait, Lilo & Stitch is still going strong! It’s actually on pace to be the very first Hollywood movie to blow past $1 billion in 2025. It opened big six weeks ago, pulling in a record-setting $182.6 million over the Memorial Day extended weekend. That’s the best opening for that holiday ever in the U.S., beating Top Gun: Maverick’s $160.5 million. It only came up short compared to Black Panther’s $242 million opening back in 2018 during Presidents Day weekend.
Lilo & Stitch Keeps Winning: Crushes Minecraft Globally, Becomes Disney’s All-Time Live-Action Champ
This movie’s doing super well internationally. Its biggest moneymakers are Mexico ($66.1 million), the UK ($47.1 million), France ($39.8 million), Brazil ($36 million), Germany ($30.2 million), Spain ($25.9 million), and China ($25.2 million). In places like France, Italy, Spain, Brazil, and Mexico, it’s already the biggest movie of the year. Plus, it’s one of the highest-grossing films ever in Brazil, Mexico, and all of Latin America. Oh, and it’s officially Disney’s top-earning live-action movie of all time in Mexico! Part of why it’s doing so well is how popular the Lilo & Stitch brand already is. It’s always done great on Disney. The whole Lilo & Stitch series has racked up over 579 million viewing hours there, with the original movie alone accounting for 306 million of those hours. And get this: Stitch merchandise revenue worldwide shot up from $200 million in 2019 to a massive $2.6 billion in 2024, Deadline says. Disney recently spilled the beans that they’re making a live-action sequel. We don’t have details on the cast or when it’s coming out yet, though. With a budget of about $100 million, Lilo & Stitch has already made back its cost more than nine times over. Even though A Minecraft Movie is also doing super well—it’s pulled in over $423 million in the U.S. alone—Lilo & Stitch’s amazing run means it’s definitely the one to beat for the year’s top spot.
