Neil Druckmann, one of the co-presidents at Naughty Dog and the creator of The Last of Us games, is stepping away from the HBO show. After two pretty intense seasons, he’s handing things over to Craig Mazin so he can get back to what he does best: making video games. And unfortunately, Halley Gross, who co-wrote The Last of Us Part II, is also saying goodbye. Druckmann put out an Instagram post saying that now that Season 2 is done and before Season 3 really gets going, it’s the perfect time for him to focus completely on Naughty Dog and their next game, which is called The Heretic. Naughty Dog even put out a statement thanking Craig Mazin, the cast, and the tech crew, saying that this TV show was the best part of Druckmann’s career so far. And Gross, in her own heartfelt message, said the filming was tough and she needs some room for whatever’s next for her. Craig Mazin (you know, the guy who did Chernobyl) said he was super grateful to work with Druckmann, and he’s gonna keep The Last of Us story going, with a really great cast and crew behind him. But, without Druckmann leading the way, there’s a thought that the show might lose its ‘moral compass’ – someone who truly knew Ellie and Joel inside and out. Still, Mazin really knows the series, so it makes sense to trust him
HBO’s got a bit of time to sort things out. Should they bring in new writers who aren’t from the game world? Or just stick to the original plan? Neil Druckmann, the main man, said no big work has even started yet. So, clear your schedules for 2027 – that’s when Season 3 of The Last of Us show is set to hit your screens. It sounds like there’ll be some shifts with Druckmann and another writer leaving, but Craig Mazin, the guy famous for Chernobyl, is still in charge.
