Following the launch of its expansion Overture last week, Lies of P has exceeded the milestone of 3 million copies sold — a notable achievement for this Korean souls-like game, which is widely regarded as one of the finest representatives of the genre outside of FromSoftware’s offerings.
Released in 2023 and developed by Neowiz and Round8 Studio, who were then unknown to Western audiences, Lies of P gained attention for closely emulating the action RPG formula created by FromSoftware. Although the inspiration was seen as bordering on plagiarism, the public recognized the studio’s competence, making Lies of P an immediate success with over 1 million copies sold in its first month. Note: 90% of sales were recorded outside of South Korea, indicating that Korean pride and patriotism did not significantly impact its success, unlike cases such as Black Myth: Wukong.
With the assurance of success from the first month and now validated by the positive reception to the Overture expansion, Neowiz is developing the sequel to Lies of P. “The universe of Lies of P is once again attracting market attention, solidifying the foundation for lasting success,” commented Kim Seung-chul, co-CEO of Neowiz. We express our deepest gratitude to fans around the world and the development team, and we will do everything we can for the next title.
The success will directly benefit the developers, who will receive an advance bonus of 10 million won (over US$7,000), as well as two additional weeks of paid vacation in addition to mandatory paid leave. Each member of the Round8 Studio team will also receive a Nintendo Switch 2 as a gift.
