After a decade of development and multiple reboots, Dead Island 2 has achieved significant success. Dambuster Studios announced the game has now surpassed 20 million players, a figure that includes both direct sales and engagement through services like Game Pass and PlayStation Plus. This milestone coincides with the studio’s quiet confirmation that they are developing Dead Island 3. The journey for Dead Island 2 began with its initial announcement in 2014. The project first resided with Yager Development, then moved to Sumo Digital in 2015, before ultimately landing with Dambuster Studios in 2019. Despite skepticism regarding Dambuster Studios’ ability to deliver on the highly anticipated title—given their previous work on Homefront: The Revolution—Dead Island 2 garnered 1 million players within three days of its April 2023 launch, which was initially exclusive to the Epic Games Store.

Following its debut, Dead Island 2’s player count continued to climb. By May 2024, the game had reached 3 million players, partly due to its release on Steam in April 2024, one year after its Epic Games Store launch. Engagement was further amplified by its inclusion in Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus subscriptions, driving the player base to over 10 million by November 2024. Deep Silver and Dambuster Studios recently confirmed that the total player count has now exceeded 20 million.

Thrilled by this success, Dambuster Studios confirmed they are working on the next installment. In a Steam update, the studio reflected on the game’s journey, stating: “It’s been 14 years since we first stepped into Banoi’s bloody paradise. Since then, the zombie apocalypse from Dead Island 2 has spread far and wide, from its tropical beaches to the fiery chaos of hell itself. Over 20 million players have left a trail of destruction behind them. But don’t think this is over just yet – Dambuster Studios are already cooking up what’s next.” While specific details remain under wraps, the studio revealed that Dead Island 2’s protagonist, Jacob, is departing Los Angeles, hinting at new adventures in the upcoming chapter.
