Spider-Man is the Best-Selling Exclusive of PlayStation's 30 Years

Top-Selling PlayStation Exclusives: Spider-Man Tops Miles Morales by 2024 Projections

While many assume The Last of Us holds the title of PlayStation's top-selling exclusive, that distinction actually belongs to Marvel's Spider-Man. This September marks PlayStation's 30th anniversary in the West, having launched in the US on September 9, 1995, and in Europe on September 29. To commemorate this milestone, industry professionals are sharing various insights. Matt Piscatella, a director at Circana, a trade data monitoring company, posted a list of PlayStation's top 20 bestsellers by units sold and profit on his Bluesky profile. The overall list predominantly features cross-platform blockbusters like Grand Theft Auto V and numerous Call of Duty titles. However, the rankings become particularly interesting when focusing on Sony's exclusive releases. Marvel's Spider-Man, released in 2018 for PlayStation 4, is PlayStation's best-selling exclusive, projected to reach approximately 25 million units sold by 2024. Following closely is Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a standalone title Circana estimates could sell around 15 million units by 2024, securing its place as the second-highest selling exclusive.

Top-Selling PlayStation Exclusives in US - Spider-Man & Miles Morales Lead, God of War Sales Impacted by Bundles

Circana's methodology is crucial for interpreting these figures. Their list exclusively counts games purchased individually and does not include copies bundled with consoles. This distinction impacts titles like God of War (2018), which, according to Sony, had already sold nearly 20 million units by 2021. Despite its commercial success, God of War often appeared lower on Circana's list due to its frequent inclusion in PlayStation 4 console bundles. Furthermore, Circana's data focuses solely on US sales, potentially overlooking games such as Final Fantasy VII Remake that may have achieved stronger sales performance in other international markets. These sales figures underscore the significant impact of the PlayStation 4 era on the brand's history, with Marvel's Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales leading the charge among PlayStation's exclusive titles.
