Hideo Kojima has been generating significant media attention recently, which is understandable given the upcoming release of Death Stranding 2. The Japanese creator has been speaking out actively, but beyond the immediate buzz surrounding Sam Porter Bridges, another project, still far off in the future, is beginning to spark discussions: Physint, a new PlayStation exclusive scheduled for release in 2030. The name was first mentioned during January 2024’s State of Play, and Kojima had then referred to it as a “new IP,” describing it as an action-spy game that blends gameplay and narrative at the cinematic edge. However, recent statements from the creator, in an interview with French magazine Le Film Français, provide more concrete details about the project’s current state.
“It will still take another five or six years,” declares Kojima, specifying that production will not truly begin until after the release of Death Stranding 2. In other words, we should not expect to see Physint before 2030, on a console generation yet to be unveiled but one that is already being speculated to accompany this future title on PlayStation 6.
We are aware of Kojima-san’s passionate connection to cinema, which he expresses exceptionally well in his work. His long-standing aspiration to become a filmmaker is evident throughout his career. With Physint, however, this ambition appears to extend into pushing the boundaries of hybridizing different forms. Already described as a project that seamlessly blends “video game and film,” Physint presents itself as both a creative manifesto and an innovative gaming experience. It is noteworthy that this announcement was made in a cinema-focused media outlet during the peak of the Cannes Film Festival. Kojima even expressed a personal wish: “Perhaps after Physint, I can finally embark on making a film. I grew up with cinema. Directing would be a kind of tribute.” These words confirm that Physint could be Kojima’s ultimate grand video game project before transitioning definitively into the realm of cinema.
The speech highlights the current priorities at Kojima Productions. The development of Physint will commence after the completion of Death Stranding 2, which is scheduled for release in 2025. OD, the undisclosed horror game developed with Xbox and produced in collaboration with Jordan Peele, was not mentioned during this interview, likely due to its focus on PlayStation projects. There is a clear connection between Physint and Hideo Kojima’s legacy with Metal Gear Solid, given his description of Physint as an “action-espionage” game, a genre he has significantly influenced. Unable to reclaim the iconic saga that is now owned by Konami, Kojima appears eager to redefine his creative identity.
