MercurySteam, the Spanish developers, are launching a new original franchise titled Blades of Fire on May 22nd. This unexpected announcement marks the release of an action-packed, intense game scheduled for three months from now. The studio hasn’t shared such positive updates since Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and has been collaborating with Nintendo for eight years, producing Metroid Samus Returns in 2017 and Metroid Dread in 2021. Blades of Fire is heavily inspired by the 2018 God of War game both visually and in gameplay mechanics. It features an action game with RPG elements where players will engage in dismembering various creatures as Aran of Lira, the firstborn of the royal guard, tasked to battle abominations alongside Adso, a scholarly companion who provides insightful observations and information.
The story focuses on Queen Nerea, recently crowned and possessing the ability to transform steel into stone. Only her army of abominations wields this divine metal, which shatters against any other blade. Blades of Fire will introduce a forge concept with a system for crafting weapons from specific materials that influence their weight, length, durability, penetration capability, and edge quality. The game will feature no fewer than 7 different weapon families and over 30 unique forge scrolls, enabling nearly infinite combinations of weapons. More than 50 types of enemies have been announced, including the queen’s guards, creatures, undead entities, and others, each with distinct attack styles, weaponry, and armor configurations.
