Disney officially announced Zootopia 3 at the D23 event, a move that comes as no surprise considering the franchise’s significant box office success. Following Zootopia 2’s impressive $1.87 billion global earnings, Disney confirmed the third installment during the D23 Entertainment 2026 showcase, hosted by Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan. Jared Bush, Chief Creative Officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios, announced the new movie and shared hints about its plot direction. This announcement was part of a larger presentation that also included teasers for Coco 2 and Incredibles 3. The cast of Zootopia 2 featured Fortune Feimster as Nibbles Maplestick, Andy Samberg as Pawbert Lynxley, David Strathairn as Milton Lynxley, Macaulay Culkin as Cattrick Lynxley, Brenda Song as Kitt Lynxley, Quinta Brunson as Dr. Fuzzby, Robert Irwin as Robert Furwin, and Patrick Warburton as Brian Winddancer. Directed by Byron Howard, the sequel achieved box office history on its opening weekend, becoming the fourth-biggest global opening ever at the time and the largest global launch of all time for an animated film. It also earned a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.

With the first two films having earned approximately $3 billion, and Zootopia 2 becoming Disney’s highest-grossing animated film, the company will continue the franchise with a third installment. The Zootopia series began in 2016 with its first movie, a box office hit that launched an animated series available on Disney+ and a sequel. The news about Zootopia 3 received only a brief mention at the D23 event, as the panel largely focused on Pixar celebrating its 40th anniversary. During the Pixar segment, Pete Docter announced that Incredibles 3 is scheduled for a June 2028 theatrical release and will feature the superhero children confronting a new supervillain. Additionally, Pixar revealed that Miguel from Coco will return to the Land of the Dead by November 2029, with Benjamin Bratt reprising his role. This installment will focus on Ernesto de la Cruz seeking revenge on a teenage Miguel after their initial encounter. At this time, it was also confirmed that Zootopia 3 does not yet have a release date.

New Locations and Bird Characters Revealed for Zootopia 3 Ahead of Release

The upcoming film will feature fox Nick Wilde and rabbit Judy Hopps returning for new adventures in previously unseen locations within Zootopia. A detail from Zootopia 2’s post-credits scene, where a feather lands on Judy Hopps’s windowsill, suggests that bird characters might enter the mammal world in the next movie. Gary DeSnake, who appeared in Zootopia 2, will also make an appearance in Zootopia 3. The production status of the film at Disney’s studios is currently unknown.
