After a period of relative silence since its official announcement in 2020, Undead Labs revealed that State of Decay 3 will enter Alpha testing as early as May 2026. This marks the first time the studio has opened its doors to the community for gameplay experimentation, despite public statements from the head of Xbox Game Studios in January 2026 affirming that the game was progressing well. In a recent video on the official State of Decay YouTube channel, franchise cocreator Brant Fitzgerald discussed the studio’s activities over the past several years. According to Fitzgerald, while most of the studio focused on supporting State of Decay 2, a dedicated internal team worked on developing new content for the third game. The studio has cautioned that the Discord Rate Limit may be reached, potentially requiring a delay before completing signup. While an official release window has not been announced, a 2026 launch appears unlikely, given Xbox’s strong first-party lineup for the coming months, including Fable, Gears of War: E-Day, and Forza Horizon 6.
