State of Decay 3 Will Soon Be Playable

After a period of relative silence since its official announcement in 2020, Undead Labs revealed that State of Decay 3 will enter Alpha testing as early as May 2026. This marks the first time the studio has opened its doors to the community for gameplay experimentation, despite public statements from the head of Xbox Game Studios in January 2026 affirming that the game was progressing well. In a recent video on the official State of Decay YouTube channel, franchise cocreator Brant Fitzgerald discussed the studio's activities over the past several years. According to Fitzgerald, while most of the studio focused on supporting State of Decay 2, a dedicated internal team worked on developing new content for the third game. To ensure it meets its goals, the team meticulously analyzed community feedback from Discord, livestreams, and gameplay clips to understand what players liked and disliked in the previous game. Fitzgerald also confirmed elements that will be included in the May 2026 PC-based Alpha playtest for selected players, including: A 4-player cooperative mode in real-time New base-building mechanics New resource management strategies Extensive combat against hordes.

State of Decay 3 Alpha Registration Underway for Selected Participants - Potential PS5 Release Hints!

Those interested can register on the official State of Decay website by linking their Discord account. The studio has cautioned that the Discord Rate Limit may be reached, potentially requiring a delay before completing signup. The studio will send invitations to selected participants via email in the coming weeks. With the Alpha test approaching, fans are eager for news regarding the full release. While an official release window has not been announced, a 2026 launch appears unlikely, given Xbox's strong first-party lineup for the coming months, including Fable, Gears of War: E-Day, and Forza Horizon 6. This suggests a potential release in 2027. While initially announced as a PC and Xbox Series X/S game, Microsoft's recent strategy of publishing titles on third-party platforms has fueled speculation that the game may also launch on PlayStation 5.
