Paramount+ has canceled Star Trek: Starfleet Academy after its second season, which has already been filmed but does not yet have a release date. Despite aiming to attract a younger audience to the Star Trek universe, the series struggled to find viewership, with none of its first-season episodes reaching Nielsen’s top 10 streaming chart. This makes Paramount+’s decision to cancel the series, despite having renewed it for a second season well before the first episode aired, all the more surprising. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy received an 87% positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but only a 51% audience score. CBS Studios and Paramount+ released a statement confirming the decision: “We are incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity involved in creating Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. We eagerly anticipate sharing the second and final season with everyone, continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that has been achieved with this series.”

Second Season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Unveiled with Promised Conclusion

Showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau also addressed fans, promising that the second season will provide a fitting conclusion to the young cadets’ story: “We are very proud of what we have accomplished together in this series, and the world will get to see the extraordinary work of these artists when the second season airs.” Since Star Trek: Discovery ushered Star Trek into the streaming era, there hasn’t been a time without a Star Trek TV show in production. While his current deal with Paramount runs through 2026, it remains to be seen whether a renewed or extended contract will include his continued oversight of the franchise.
