Despite losing to Sentimental Value, Wagner Moura, star of The Secret Agent, expressed relief that the awards season had concluded. In an interview with Variety, Moura called his first Oscars experience “a great experience,” adding, “You know, it’s like scaling a huge mountain, and today we’re at the top of it.” The son of Alderiva Moura and Jose Moura, a retired Brazilian Air Force sergeant, Wagner Moura is the elder of two children. He spent his early years in Rodelas and moved to Salvador at 13. In 1999, he graduated from the Federal University of Bahia with a journalism degree. During his time there, he co-founded a rock band, Sua Mae, which released albums in 2010 and 2023. After growing up in northeastern Brazil, Moura has resided in Los Angeles since 2017. The Secret Agent, set in Recife in 1977, stars Moura as Marcelo, a technology expert who returns home after years abroad seeking peace, only to uncover dangerous secrets. Kleber Mendonca Filho (Bacurau) directed and wrote the political thriller, which also features Maria Fernanda Candido, Gabriel Leone, Carlos Francisco, Alice Carvalho, Roberto Diogenes, Hermila Guedes, and Udo Kier (Bacurau).

Moura’s Best Actor nomination was a historic first for a Brazilian actor. The Secret Agent earned four nominations, including one for Achievement in Casting. Fernando Grecco, a scholar with a master’s degree in Multimedia from Unicamp who is familiar with Moura’s body of work, considers his performance in this film to be unique.
