Demon Hunters, the KPop animation film, will be released on Blu-ray and 4K by the Criterion Collection. This marks a departure from Netflix’s standard practice of keeping its original content exclusively on its streaming platform. This agreement with Criterion follows the film’s success as Netflix’s most-watched animated feature. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, Demon Hunters centers on the Huntrix, a popular KPop band secretly hunting demons. The film blends action, music, and 3D animation with a distinctive visual style, earning nominations for Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song (“Golden”) at the Academy Awards on March 15. The physical release provides access to audiences beyond Netflix subscribers and collectors of physical media. This availability suggests Sony Pictures Animation retains rights allowing some of its films to be released on physical formats, as seen with the earlier Sony Pictures Animation film The Mitchells vs. the Machines, which is already available on Blu-ray. Currently, both Demon Hunters and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein are available for streaming on Netflix. While the Criterion Collection will release Demon Hunters, no announcement has been made regarding a physical release for Frankenstein.
