NBA 2K27: Victor Wembanyama Becomes The First French Player To Appear On An International Edition Of The Series

Victor Wembanyama, the French basketball phenom, is set to become the face of the Standard Edition of NBA 2K27. This achievement makes him the first French player to ever feature on a global cover for the franchise, a symbolic recognition for the San Antonio Spurs star. Since his arrival in the NBA as the number one draft pick in 2023 and subsequent Rookie of the Year award, Wembanyama has continually collected honors. His latest milestone solidifies his ambassadorial role for a franchise followed by millions of players worldwide. Wembanyama's presence on the cover is more than just a marketing success; it is deeply rooted in his personal history. He grew up and trained in Chesnay-Rocquencourt, Yvelines. On January 21, 2025, a basketball court built specifically for him opened in his hometown, with a foundation donation from the Spurs organization contributing to the 500,000-euro project. Since joining the league, Wembanyama has established himself as one of the most closely followed players in NBA history. He notably became the first player in league history to win the Defensive Player of the Year trophy unanimously. His inclusion on NBA 2K27 also signifies an evolution in French representation within the franchise.

The featured artwork for the Standard Edition captures a moment from a 2026 playoff game between the Spurs and the Phoenix Suns, also including teammates Dylan Harper and Devin Vassell. Wembanyama specifically chose this image, wanting to feature his teammates to represent an emotional moment he felt was more impactful for the cover than other available options. While Tony Parker and Pau Gasol previously appeared on regional international covers, Wembanyama is the first French player to headline the worldwide Standard Edition. This marks a powerful symbol of the growing internationalization of the NBA. To accompany Wembanyama, 2K Games has selected two other prominent figures in current basketball. The Deluxe Edition will feature Caitlin Clark, the leader of the Indiana Fever, who continues to transform visibility for women's basketball since her WNBA debut. Derrick Rose, the former MVP and youngest player to receive the award in NBA history, will be the star of the Ultra Edition, marking his return to an NBA 2K cover after his appearance in NBA 2K13. Three editions of NBA 2K27 are scheduled for launch: Standard Edition: Featuring Victor Wembanyama, priced at $69.99. Deluxe Edition: Featuring Caitlin Clark, priced at $99.99.
