This Super Mario Bros Copy Sold for $3 Million, an Absolute Record!

The retro gaming market has reached a new milestone, as a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. was sold at auction for $3 million, making it the most expensive video game in history. This sale, facilitated by Heritage Auctions in June 2021, surpassed the previous record of $2 million set earlier that year. The market for old, sealed video games has been steadily growing. A game's condition and specific variant details can significantly impact its value, distinguishing between a few hundred dollars and millions. This particular Super Mario Bros. cartridge achieved its record-breaking price due to its rarity and exceptional condition. Graded at a PSA 9.6, it features an intact gloss sticker seal, indicating it is from the game's second production run in 1985, before Nintendo transitioned to standardized shrinkwrap plastic. Only three other sealed copies from this run are known to exist, and this is the earliest discovered.

This Super Mario Bros. cartridge is considered one of the rarest authenticated copies. It originates from the second production run of the 1985 NES game, identifiable by its specific glossy sticker seal. This particular copy is also recognized as the oldest known sealed example of this version. Its PSA 9.6 grade is one of the highest ever attributed to an example of this variant. According to Heritage Auctions, this is the best known sealed example of this precise Super Mario Bros. production. The cartridge was discovered only a few months prior to its auction, found inside a sealed Control Deck NES bundle that had remained unopened for nearly forty years. This means the game had never been used or handled since its release. The lot also included the launch edition NES Control Deck console, preserved in its original packaging, adding significant prestige to the acquisition.

Unparalleled Super Mario Bros Cartridge Breaks Video Game Auction Record, Akin to Pikachu Illustrator of Gaming Collectibles

For collectors, this type of item is often compared to the rarest Pokémon cards or the best-preserved historical comics. Some refer to such specimens as the "Pikachu Illustrator" of video games, referencing the most famous and sought-after Pokémon card. Evan Masingill, Video Game Sales Director at Heritage Auctions, emphasized the symbolic significance: the game that helped popularize the video game industry globally now holds the absolute record in the collecting domain.
