Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy Resonance, the first game in the series to adopt the HD2D art style, a visual approach popularized by titles like Octopath Traveler and the Dragon Quest remakes. The announcement was made during a Nintendo Direct presentation, which also revealed an imminent release date of October 22, 2026. Final Fantasy Resonance will feature a turn-based combat system, aiming to recapture a classic RPG structure while offering a modern presentation. The HD2D aesthetic combines pixel art characters with high-definition backgrounds, sophisticated lighting, and depth effects, creating a visual reminiscent of past JRPGs with contemporary resources. The game is set to launch on October 22, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Final Fantasy Resonance is based on the initial story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, with Square Enix describing it as a polished and significantly rebuilt version compared to its mobile origins. The project adapts known elements from that experience into a more robust and traditional console version. Popular characters such as Cloud Strife and Tidus will appear as guest characters. Two editions of the game are available for purchase: Digital Deluxe Edition: $59.99

Collector's Edition: $209.99 In addition to Final Fantasy Resonance, other Final Fantasy titles are heading to the Nintendo Switch 2: Final Fantasy XIV Online is scheduled for release in August 2026. The HD remasters of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 will launch on July 23. Square Enix also shared franchise sales milestones: The Final Fantasy series has sold over 212 million units worldwide. The Dragon Quest series has sold over 97 million units globally. The Kingdom Hearts series has shipped over 39 million units worldwide. Separately, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of An Elusive Age has shipped nearly 9 million units globally, and Kingdom Hearts IV is slated for release on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Square Enix, Inc., based in the U.S., is a subsidiary of Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. SUGIYAMA KOBO and YOSHITAKA AMANO hold copyright for certain elements in the Final Fantasy series.

Final Fantasy Resonance Debuts HD-2D Style, Nostalgic Turn-Based Combat for Cross-Platform Release

The arrival of a Final Fantasy title in HD2D fulfills a recurring fan request, especially after Square Enix's investment in this style for other franchises. With Resonance, the company brings this visual language to its most prominent series, offering a nostalgic reading of the brand while appealing to new players. Alongside its visuals, the turn-based combat system directly targets fans who miss the series' classic phase, updated with a refined presentation. While not all systems have been detailed, the combination of HD2D, turn-based battles, and a multiplatform release in October positions Final Fantasy Resonance as a significant surprise from the recent Nintendo Direct.
