Fumito Ueda Explains the Meaning Behind Gen Atlas Name

Discover a breathtaking world of colossal machines and profound partnerships in Fumito Ueda's upcoming game, Gen Atlas - the highly-anticipated follow-up to Shadow of the Colossus, Ico, and The Last Guardian, funded by Epic Games for release on multiple platforms.

Fumito Ueda, the acclaimed designer behind Shadow of the Colossus, Ico, and The Last Guardian, has revealed further details about his new game, Gen Atlas, previously known as Project Robot. The game was showcased in a trailer at Summer Game Fest 2026, and Ueda elaborated on its title and themes in an interview with Eurogamer. The name Gen Atlas is a deliberate combination of two concepts. "Gen" draws from associations with "genesis," "gene," and the English word "generate," alluding to creation. "Atlas" carries multiple meanings: the common understanding of a world map, but also the first cervical vertebra connecting the head to the neck, a visual cue present in the game's robot designs. Ueda felt these elements, when combined, would "complement each other, but also create a word or title that would capture the totality of the world we're building."

Gen Atlas is being developed by Ueda’s studio, GenDesign, and will be published by Epic Games. This marks Ueda's first non-PlayStation title, with planned releases for PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game features a world populated by robots and expansive landscapes, with environments that appear to change over time, hinting at systemic interactions. The Gen Atlas trailer has drawn comparisons to Shadow of the Colossus, with giant robots replacing the mythical creatures of that game. Ueda confirmed this similarity, stating that Shadow of the Colossus is the "most similar" in terms of the balance between action, the scale of the world, the adventure, and the player's journey. Beyond Shadow of the Colossus, Gen Atlas also echoes the themes of partnership between large entities and smaller protagonists found in Ico and The Last Guardian. Gameplay in Gen Atlas will introduce new mechanics for Ueda, including firearms and third-person shooting, jetpacks for traversing vertical structures, vehicles for navigating the wasteland, and the ability to pilot a mech to take over dormant machines. The narrative will focus on the "little guy versus big guy" dynamic, a core element of Ueda’s emotional storytelling.

Fumito Ueda's Vision and Colossal Robots in Gen Atlas Development

Ueda explained that the development of Gen Atlas is a lengthy process because his pursuit of a specific vision does not compromise, regardless of obstacles. The game’s world-building began with the colossal robots, with the environment and tone developed around them. One aspect of the game's rebuilding process involves attaching an engine-equipped head to the skeletal remains of a massive mechanical corpse buried in the sand. While GenDesign received significant support from Epic Games, Ueda noted that the development process has not drastically differed from working with Sony's Japan Studio, as his team has historically operated with a high degree of independence. Gen Atlas is slated for release at an unspecified date.
