The highly anticipated reboot of the Fable franchise has been officially delayed, with its release now slated for February 2027. This action RPG, developed by Playground Games, is set in the whimsical and idyllic realm of Albion, known for its British humor, drama, and magic, continuing the legacy of Lionhead Studios. Players will embark on a journey starting as a child in Briar Hill, venturing beyond home to lift a curse and save the world. The game is expected to feature familiar elements, including a character resembling Richard Ayoade. Matt Booty, Head of Xbox Game Studios, expressed excitement about the game’s development and confirmed the new February 2027 release window, citing a desire for a more favorable launch period. This marks the first time Fable will be available on a Sony console, alongside its release on Xbox Series X|S and PC. The delay comes as rumors of a postponement have circulated for months. It strategically avoids a launch close to the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, which is expected on November 19th. Booty, without naming Rockstar or GTA, indicated that the primary goal was to allow Fable to benefit from a more favorable launch window.

During an official Xbox podcast, Booty reassured audiences about the game’s status, stating that Playground Games is satisfied with the development progress and that the game is in excellent shape. The extended timeline is not due to production issues but rather a commitment to giving Fable the attention it deserves at launch. The delay was confirmed on May 29th, 2026, by the official Xbox account, pushing the release to February 2027. Earlier, in April 2026, Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb hinted at internal shifts regarding Fable’s development timeline, with a Fall 2026 release being suggested after the Xbox Developer Direct event. The original Witcher 3 expansion “Songs of the Past” was initially planned for release this year, and a new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game, available only on newer consoles, is also coming. Given the immense expectations surrounding the return of this cult license, absent for over a decade, and Playground Games’ reputation established with the Forza Horizon series, Microsoft aims to prevent the RPG from being overshadowed by major releases.

Brief SummaryThe adventure in which you are about to embark tells the story of how once upon a time a young boy named Quickthorpe set out a journey through the lost world of Balkhane. It is a Fable in one way, but in the 'trick of the tale', it's a strange adventure through a shattered world and a saga born out of the very sick mind of a man called Ismael.

Long ago in the mists of time lived the Mecubarz. Ancient and beautiful, powerful and wise they ruled absolute. Strange beings, magical creatures and humans lived together in peace and harmony, until greed destroyed it all. Ismael, a respected man, and revered by all, sadly had a heart that was hollow and bitter. He and four others plotted to overthrow the Mecubarz.

The Mecubarz' fury at the treason of Ismael and his men was cataclysmic. They trapped the four seasons and put them into impenetrable crystals, casting them to the four corners of the shattered world where they stood still and were held in an eternal dominion of ice, mist, water, and fire. The four traitors were exiled, but Ismael disappeared.

As Quickthorpe, an inexperienced adventurer, your quest is to explore the Four Lands of the Mecubarz in search of the mystical gems that will liberate your people. Keen observation, puzzle-solving skill and quick thinking are the abilities required to undertake this exciting but unpredictable task. Interact with a universe of characters which come to life with true speech creating a world with an atmosphere so thick you can feel it. Combined stunning animations and atmospheric sound effects will ensure that Fable will take you on the journey of a lifetime!

But beware... in the world of Fable not everything is as it seems.
