The Neo Geo AES, a modern reimagining of SNK’s classic console, has experienced an exceptionally strong launch, surpassing all expectations. Lars Wingefors, co-founder of Embracer Group, parent company of Plaion, shared on LinkedIn that the console’s planned annual volume sold out within 24 hours of preorders opening. This highly anticipated retro gaming revival arrives on the 35th anniversary of the original Neo Geo’s North American release. Preorders for the Neo Geo AES are currently live on Plaion’s website, with the console scheduled for release on November 12, 2026. The system will launch with eleven pre-installed games: Metal Slug, The King of Fighters 2002, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Big Tournament Golf, Shock Troopers, Samurai Shodown V Special, Pulstar, Twinkle Star Sprites, Magician Lord, and Over Top. Pricing for the Neo Geo AES is as follows: Standard Edition: $249.99 USD Anniversary Edition (includes Metal Slug): $349.99 USD Ultimate Edition (includes all games): $999.99 USD.

Additional accessories, such as wireless arcade sticks, gamepads, and memory cards, will be sold separately. Plaion is also planning to release more Neo Geo game cartridges for the system, though specific titles have not yet been announced. These will be sold at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $139.99 each. The original Neo Geo AES system, launched by SNK in April 1990, remained popular and continued to receive new game releases until 2004, despite becoming technologically outdated by the mid-90s. In 2023, SNK successfully reclaimed its original name and logo after legal disputes over intellectual property rights, rebranding as the direct successor to the classic company. The new Neo Geo AES features newly manufactured chips based on the original hardware. Initial sales have reportedly been exceptionally robust, with some estimations suggesting around 300,000 units were sold on the first day of preorders. The console has achieved a number one sales spot on Amazon in both the US and France, leading to an increase in production to meet demand. This widespread enthusiasm suggests the project’s appeal extends beyond traditional retro gaming enthusiasts, tapping into a desire to own a piece of gaming history once exclusive to a select group.
