Elden Ring for Nintendo Switch 2 Demonstrates Performance Improvement

FromSoftware's Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, slated for release on the Nintendo Switch 2, was showcased at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) this year. The Switch 2 version demonstrated improved performance compared to its initial demo at Gamescom 2025, addressing earlier concerns about unstable frame rates. Originally planned for a 2025 release, Elden Ring was delayed to 2026 due to those technical challenges. The GDC demo showed optimized performance for both handheld and docked modes on the Switch 2. Testers of the new build reported significant improvements over the Gamescom version, where frame rates had sometimes dropped to the low twenties in open areas, impacting playability. The GDC build reportedly delivers frame rates between 30 and 40 frames per second, though occasional dips occur during intense weather events like rainstorms, indicating ongoing optimization efforts. While remaining below the 60 frames per second seen on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X, the Switch 2 version reportedly avoids the stuttering issues of earlier builds and outperforms the Steam Deck.

Enhanced Content and Texture Refinements in Elden Ring Tarnished Edition for Nintendo Switch 2

Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition also introduces new content. Gamespot's gameplay footage featured Messmer the Impaler and showcased two new starting classes: a heavily armored knight with high defense and low mobility, and a lightly equipped knight wielding the Milady sword from the Shadows of the Erdtree DLC. The game now features more consistent textures in both portable and TV modes. While Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition still lacks a definitive release date, these improvements suggest a more polished experience is on the horizon. Fans can anticipate further refinements before the game's launch on the Nintendo Switch 2, alongside other third-party titles such as Tales of Arise and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
