Resident Evil Creator Shinji Mikami Launches New Studio

Shinji Mikami Founds New Studio Unbound, Employs Shadow of the Colossus and Silent Hill Credited Staff

After nearly three years without news, Shinji Mikami, the creator of the Resident Evil franchise, has announced his next career move: he will lead a new independent studio named Unbound, focused on developing AAA and AA games. According to Unbound's official website, the studio was founded on November 30, 2022, and began operations in May 2023. While the studio's official announcement occurred this week, Unbound already employs 50 people and plans to expand to around 150. The Unbound staff includes those with credits on Silent Hill and Shadow of the Colossus. Mikami serves as the representative director of Unbound. Masato Kimura, producer of Hi-Fi Rush and Ghostwire: Tokyo—and who previously collaborated with Mikami on the Resident Evil and Devil May Cry franchises—is also part of the venture. Having departed Tango Gameworks (a Bethesda Softworks studio) in February 2023, where he had been making games since 2010, Mikami left to spearhead the Unbound project. As of now, the Unbound website does not list any games in development, and there is no confirmation of current projects.
