In the US: Father and Daughter Shot Dead in Meeting to Buy PlayStation

A father and his 19-year-old daughter, both electricians, were murdered in a rural area of Sardis, Mississippi, after arranging to meet a seller of PlayStation 5 consoles advertised on Facebook Marketplace. The family suspects they were targeted in an ambush, raising concerns about the inherent risks of in-person transactions arranged online. The victims were identified as 39-year-old Victor Gonzalez and his 19-year-old daughter, Serenity Gonzalez. According to local authorities and relatives, Victor and Serenity were last seen two days before their bodies were discovered inside their work van on March 1, not February 28 as initial reports stated. Victor's son and Serenity's younger brother, Jesse Waterman, told news outlet WATN that he described his sister as "a really fun person." The family's truck was found muddy on a country road in Sardis. Jesse noted that the van is usually kept clean, adding that it appeared they had been trying to quickly leave the area.

Unsuspecting Victims Meet Tragic End in PlayStation 5 Deal Gone Awry

Police discovered Victor and Serenity's bodies at the scene of a one-car crash. Panola County Sheriff Shane Phelps stated that investigators have not yet found evidence of robbery or ambush. Jesse also said that Victor and Serenity had no known enemies and that they had been planning to purchase a PlayStation 5 they found on Facebook Marketplace on February 28, the day they disappeared. Investigators determined that tire tracks at the scene indicate their vehicle attempted a quick exit. The van was found on a rural road covered in mud, further suggesting they tried to flee the meeting arranged to negotiate the video game sale. Authorities have not confirmed whether the crime was a robbery, an ambush, or something else, and the investigation is ongoing. Platforms like Facebook Marketplace facilitate direct buying and selling; however, this case underscores the potential dangers of meeting strangers in isolated locations. According to reports from Aqui, Uai portal, and People, other recent incidents highlight these risks. In late January, Eliza Morales, a 30-year-old pregnant woman, was murdered in Downers Grove, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Separately, a 25-year-old woman and her 21-year-old boyfriend were arrested in California for allegedly planning a murder.
