Congratulations to the Marathon team on their recent launch. Don’t overlook smaller indie passion projects like Slay the Spire 2, which launched March 5, 2026. Mega Crit cofounder Casey Yano stated on social media that a recent Mega Crit tweet about Marathon was more harsh than intended. Slay the Spire 2 has surpassed Bungie’s Marathon in player concurrency on Steam, boasting over 350,000 players at launch. The game has exceeded even Mewgenics to set a new record for the most players simultaneously active in a roguelike game on Steam. Slay the Spire 2’s Steam launch saw over 177,000 more players online at the same time than Marathon’s peak of 86,718. While currently only available on PC in Early Access, Mega Crit anticipates it will remain so for one to two years. Slay the Spire 2 has reached peaks of over 420,000 players, almost ten times more than Marathon on Steam. This indie title is competing with a major AAA PlayStation title from Sony.

Marathon’s Expansion on Consoles vs Slay the Spire 2’s Dominance on Steam

In contrast, Marathon is now available on PS5 and Xbox, suggesting that most of its player base is on consoles. The game received positive reviews on Steam and among active PS5 users, earning a 4.78 out of 5 rating from thousands of PlayStation Network user reviews. As a live service game with seasonal updates, Marathon has time to expand its audience. Despite initial negative feedback during the 2025 beta, Bungie has significantly improved the game for the PlayStation Network. Yano has since clarified that his sarcastic remark about Marathon was intended as a joke.
