Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 5 Pro will launch with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) 2, debuting the technology in Resident Evil Requiem. This announcement, last updated on February 27, 2026, clarifies an earlier mention of Resident Evil Reverie as the launch title. The improved PSSR is a result of Project Amethyst, a strategic partnership with AMD that integrates FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 4 advancements into Sony's hardware to address visual inconsistencies present since the console's launch. The new version of PSSR utilizes distinct approaches in its neural network and global processing. According to Masaru Ijuin, Senior Manager of Engine Development Support Section at Capcom, this technology allows Resident Evil Requiem to run at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second with active ray tracing, upscaling from a base slightly above 1080p while preserving texture and edge details. Capcom leveraged PSSR 2's power to enhance the fidelity of protagonists in the RE Engine. This includes rendering hair and beards as individual polygons that interact realistically with physics and lighting. Technical analyses by Digital Foundry validate the solution's effectiveness, describing the image quality as comparable to the best image reconstruction results on the PC market.
Enhanced Visual Fidelity for PlayStation 5 Pro with FSR 4 Integration and Realistic Character Rendering in Resident Evil Requiem
A software update scheduled for March will introduce the "Improve Image Quality by PSSR" option in the PlayStation 5 Pro settings, allowing over 50 already optimized titles to benefit from the new algorithm. The upgrade standardizes visual fidelity by eliminating noise and stutter artifacts that initially detracted from the PlayStation 5 Pro's reception. PSSR 2 marks the technical maturity of Sony's console. Tudocelular reports that by integrating the FSR 4 architecture with six months of exclusive refinement in a lab, Sony delivers technological parity with NVIDIA's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), as originally planned for the hardware project. This enhancement allows Capcom's upgraded RE Engine in Resident Evil Requiem to improve the visual quality of characters by rendering each strand of hair and beard as polygons, making them move realistically in response to body motion and wind. With the integration of FSR 4, the updated PSSR for the PlayStation 5 Pro is poised to elevate the console's visual performance.
