With the release of Resident Evil: Revelations, Capcom revisits the origins of biological terror, set nearly 30 years after the Raccoon City tragedy. At the center of this new conspiracy is Victor Gideon, a mastermind who departs from the typical brute-force villain. Gideon is portrayed as a cold, calculating scientist with deep roots in the Umbrella Corporation’s dark past. Gideon’s motivation stems from his obsession with the Elpis project (named for the Greek mythological personification of hope). However, for this former Umbrella scientist, hope is perverted into a macabre goal: to force humanity’s evolution through advanced T-Virus variants. This ambition puts him on a collision course with Grace Ashcroft, whom Gideon kidnaps, believing her blood and genetic heritage hold the key to unlocking Elpis’s true potential. (Grace’s mother is Alyssa Ashcroft, a survivor of the Raccoon City zombie outbreak who appeared in Resident Evil: Apocalypse.) The timeline then shifts back to Raccoon City in September 1998, where two separate storylines unfolded:

Leon S. Kennedy, a rookie cop, meets Claire Redfield, who is searching for her brother Chris. They encounter Mr. X, a Tyrant variant, and William Birkin, an Umbrella scientist developing the G-Virus. Ada Wong appears as a seemingly rogue FBI agent, but is actually a mercenary seeking the G-Virus. Sherry Birkin, William’s daughter, is captured and infected with the G-Virus at an orphanage, but Claire helps her escape and is cured. Jill Valentine from Resident Evil 3 is attacked by Nemesis, an Umbrella-created super-soldier, and contracts the T-Virus. Carlos Oliveira helps Jill escape the city and uncovers Umbrella’s attempts to cover up their activities, including developing a T-Virus cure. As the U.S. government prepares to destroy Raccoon City with a missile strike, Jill successfully flees. Gideon relies on enforcers like the new pursuer Tyrant and the Wesker clone mercenary, Zeno, to carry out his plans while he orchestrates events from the shadows.

Victor Gideon’s methodical, philosophical approach to bioterrorism distinguishes him from iconic monsters like Nemesis or Mr. X. He views himself as an unacknowledged savior. However, in keeping with Resident Evil tradition, his scientific arrogance comes at a price. In the game’s canonical ending, should players choose to free the Elpis substance, Gideon’s plans fail. In desperation, he mutates into a colossal monstrosity, becoming the final boss in a classic battle alongside Leon S. Kennedy and Grace. Gideon does not appear in Resident Evil 7 Biohazard. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard introduces Ethan Winters and Mia, whose story unfolds on a Louisiana plantation, and the new bioweapon character, Eveline. In Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, BSAA (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance) helicopters displaying the Umbrella logo hint at connections to Blue Umbrella, a new spinoff organization formed after Umbrella’s collapse. Resident Evil Village, set three years after the events of Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, introduces a village overrun with zombies and werewolves. Mother Miranda, a cult leader whose long life is attributed to the black mold (Megamycete), mentored Spencer. Rose from Resident Evil Village grows up to become a BSAA agent.
