Obsidian Abandons The Outer Worlds Series, but Will Preserve Avowed's Universe Despite Poor Sales

Obsidian Entertainment has reevaluated its development strategy after The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed failed to meet sales expectations, leading to the cancellation of further games in The Outer Worlds series. According to a Bloomberg interview with Obsidian CEO Fergus Urquhart, these results have prompted the studio to reconsider its investment levels and development timelines, shifting towards smaller projects to mitigate risk. Urquhart stated that Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 had been in development for over six years. As a result of their recent experiences, Obsidian intends to focus on projects with a maximum development cycle of three to four years. The studio is also working on additional content for The Outer Worlds 2 and Grounded 2, as well as unannounced new games. Design Director Josh Sawyer noted the challenges of releasing three Obsidian games in one year, a situation he jokingly referred to as "Microsoft's year of Obsidian." Sawyer explained that this clustered release schedule, which he emphasized was coincidental, strained the team's resources and contributed to employee burnout. To prevent similar situations in the future, Obsidian plans to space out releases more strategically.
