DC Publisher Jim Lee Praises Manga's Broad Appeal and Creative Diversity Over Western Comics

In a recent discussion, Jim Lee, DC Comics' publisher and a celebrated comic book artist, shared his perspective on the rising popularity of Japanese manga and anime over Western comics. Lee suggests that their novelty is a key factor, attracting younger audiences who are seeking something different. He also explained that Japanese narratives offer greater diversity and creative range compared to Western comics. "Manga tales are just so powerful," Lee stated. "I’m always thinking what’s missing from our comics? Why can’t we do that?" He further noted that manga's strength lies in its broad appeal. Extending beyond superhero stories, it encompasses genres like cooking and sports, making it "real literature" accessible to everyone. Lee was enthusiastic about manga's increasing success and observed that, unlike in the West, adults in Japan also widely consume anime and manga, embracing it as more than just children's entertainment.
