CEO Admits Mistake in Highguard's Presentation at The Game Awards

Mistakes in Highguard's Game Awards Launch Impact Player Feedback and Post-Launch Strategy

Here's what happened with Highguard. The game launched on January 26, 2026, but Wildlight's Dusty Welch later conceded that the release could have been better, as the game failed to make a strong first impression. Wildlight had initially planned a surprise launch, similar to Apex Legends. However, Geoff Keighley suggested revealing the game at The Game Awards. Welch explained that the resulting trailer focused too heavily on conventional combat rather than showcasing Highguard's unique gameplay mechanics and features. Consequently, player feedback was largely negative. Steam reviews have criticized Highguard for feeling like a generic free-to-play shooter, citing uninspired gameplay and a lack of distinct character. Welch stated that Wildlight intentionally went silent after The Game Awards reveal to assess player reactions before the official launch, and to inform their post-release development plans. Highguard is now available as a free-to-play title on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Wildlight intends to support the game with ongoing updates, including new modes and content.
