The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Delivers Everything in a Fecal Joke

The opening scene of The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms establishes the tone for both the story and its protagonist, Dunk. The series begins with Dunk burying Ser Arlan, his former knight, and contemplating his next move. He considers selling their horses, but knows the money wouldn't last. He thinks about heading to King's Landing to join the city guard, where he could use his sword skills for good. Ultimately, he resolves to compete in a tournament at Ashford, confident that his training, sword, and three horses equip him to succeed as a knight. This image of heroic aspiration is then immediately subverted. As the music swells, Dunk is abruptly seized by a digestive complaint, forcing him to relieve himself in the woods. This contrast signals that The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will offer a more grounded perspective than its predecessor. Despite his circumstances, Dunk retains a sense of morality amid the chaos of Westeros. When considering joining the King's Landing guard, his first thought is how he might prevent the sexual assault of women, rather than seeking personal gain through bribes or prestige. This highlights his uncorrupted nature in a world of betrayal and scheming.

Embodying Humor and Grittiness in Seven Kingdoms: A Fresh Perspective with Knight Dunk

The series makes it clear that this isn't a story of grand power struggles or humanity's survival. Instead, it focuses on Dunk, who, though not a true knight, must embody the role to survive. Whether audiences find the scene humorous or distasteful, it effectively introduces the series' distinctive approach. The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms promises a different perspective on Westeros, one that embraces humor and down-to-earth storytelling. The first episode is available on HBO Max.
