Sega's Year-Long Sonic the Hedgehog 35th Anniversary Celebration Unveils Fan Events, Merchandise, Digital Projects, and More!

On January 16, 2026, Sega celebrates the 35th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, who first appeared on screens in 1991 and has since become one of gaming's most iconic franchises. To celebrate, Sega will launch a year-long program showcasing Sonic's history and future direction. Sega kicked off the celebration with an anniversary trailer highlighting milestone moments and announcing its 2026 plans, which include fan events, merchandise, collaborations, and digital projects. These include community meetups, pop-up museum and art exhibits, live concerts, a narrative podcast, and the release of a physical Switch version of Sonic Racing: Crossworlds on March 26th. Marcella Churchill, Vice President of SEGAATLUS Brand Marketing at SEGA of America, expressed her excitement about celebrating the anniversary with fans and promised new content, partnerships, and collectibles throughout the year. Fans can find the latest updates on the official Sonic the Hedgehog 35th Anniversary website. Sega also conducted a poll to determine fans' favorite Sonic characters, such as E100 AlphaZERO, Knuckles the Echidna, and Shadow the Hedgehog. The program includes digital content tracing Sonic's evolution. Sega aims to leverage Sonic's enduring appeal by uniting a global community through a blend of nostalgia and innovation.

Sonic's 35th Anniversary Journey Beyond Gaming Frontiers

Notably, Sonic's journey began as a cameo in Sega's arcade racing game Rad Mobile in February 1991. Since then, Sonic has expanded beyond video games to become a cultural phenomenon through new characters, worlds, film adaptations, animated series, and merchandise. While the latest major release in the series was Sonic Frontiers in 2022 for PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One, a new Sonic the Hedgehog video game has not been announced as part of the anniversary plans.
