Nia DaCosta's Modern Twist on Hedda Receives Acclaim for Blending Drama and Comedy
Born and raised in New York City, DaCosta studied filmmaking at NYU and earned a master's degree from London's Central School of Speech and Drama. She made her debut as a feature director in 2018 with the indie crime drama Little Woods. More recently, DaCosta directed Hedda, which gives Henrik Ibsen's classic story a modern twist by setting it in the 1950s and stars Nina Hoss, who previously played Hedda Gabler on stage in Germany. DaCosta describes the film's atmosphere as surreal, "like the kind of wild party where you find yourself wondering, 'What on earth is going on here?' It’s definitely a movie you won’t forget anytime soon." Reviews indicate that Hedda blends its lead character's journey with comedic elements to create an emotional viewing experience.
